A Coinbase software engineer has taken a digital simulation of a fruit fly brain and connected it to his trading software. The virtual fly currently manages a small portfolio consisting of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and USDC. It decides whether to buy or sell based on dopamine neuron stimulation that triggers whenever it makes a profit on the market.

So far, the results are modest. The fly has lost roughly one dollar since it started trading with its initial budget. This project relies on a massive brain map recently released by Google and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. That map contains 166,000 neurons and took two decades to assemble, providing a deep look into how a fly brain functions.

While the fly is trading real assets, it is important to remember this is not a sentient creature. The software simply uses the insect's neural connections to react to stimuli. Other developers are experimenting with the code too, with some using it to teach the fly to park virtual cars or solve Rubik's cubes in different simulations.

Traders should keep an eye on this as a quirky example of how AI agents are interacting with digital finance. While the fly is not a serious threat to hedge funds or professional investors, it highlights how quickly developers are finding new ways to apply complex biological data to real world financial tools.
