LIVEThe debate over how much non financial data belongs on the Bitcoin blockchain has taken a wild turn. While some developers want to clamp down on what they call spam, a new software client called DOG Mode is taking the exact opposite approach.
This comes as a response to BIP 110, a proposal that aims to restrict data storage on Bitcoin through a consensus change. However, BIP 110 has gained almost zero support from Bitcoin miners, who make money from processing transactions regardless of what data they contain.
Instead of waiting for a slow voting process, DOG Mode lets users run node software that openly welcomes this data. Because it is a local client setting rather than a network wide rule change, anyone can run it immediately without needing a community consensus vote. This could make it much harder for anti spam developers to force restrictions on the network.
