Crypto security took a strange turn recently when researchers at Galaxy Research revealed a massive attack on cold storage. Hackers managed to steal more than 70 million dollars worth of bitcoin from nearly 1,200 different wallets. The wild part is that the physical devices were never touched or compromised during the entire operation.

Instead of breaking the hardware, the attacker exploited weak random number generators used when creating the original seed phrases. This flaw allowed the bad actors to recreate the private keys entirely offline. Once they had the keys, they swept the funds clean and kept scanning for more vulnerable setups without leaving any traditional malware footprints behind.

This incident is a sharp reminder that cold storage is only as safe as the randomness used to set it up. Traders and holders need to use trusted entropy sources and update their security practices. Keep an eye out for better wallet auditing tools and remember to check how your seed phrase was originally generated.
