LIVEA group of Bitcoin users is taking legal action against Apple after losing a combined $1.8 million to fraudulent apps. The victims downloaded software disguised as the popular Sparrow wallet, only to have their assets drained after entering their recovery phrases. The lawsuit argues that Apple failed to screen these malicious apps properly despite marketing its platform as a secure marketplace.
Sparrow is known for being a desktop only tool for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Because there is no official mobile version, any app claiming to be Sparrow on a smartphone should have been easy for regulators and platform hosts to flag as a scam. Victims like James Ramirez and Christopher Ellis reported combined losses of over $1.7 million, with some users reaching out to both the developer and Apple immediately after their funds were stolen.
This incident highlights a growing problem with phishing apps that copy well known crypto brands like Ledger and MetaMask. While Apple claims it has now removed the fake apps and closed the accounts behind them, the plaintiffs maintain that Apple is responsible for the financial damage due to its oversight failures. For now, the best defense remains checking official developer websites before downloading any wallet software to your device.
