Bitcoin Whales Are Buying But Network Activity Stays Quiet

Bitcoin whales and spot ETFs are currently absorbing supply at a rapid pace. CryptoQuant data shows addresses holding at least 10,000 BTC added over 46,000 coins in the two months leading up to August 9. This represents the strongest accumulation period since March. During the same timeframe, smaller retail holders with less than 1 BTC have been steadily reducing their positions, signaling a clear shift in market sentiment toward larger institutional control.

Despite this strong buying interest, the broader Bitcoin network is showing signs of fatigue. On chain data from Glassnode indicates that active addresses, transfer volumes, and network fees remain near historical lows. These metrics suggest that the current price bounce is not yet supported by broad market participation or organic growth, which is often a requirement for a sustainable long term trend.

Market liquidity is another concern for traders right now. Monthly trading volumes on major exchanges like Binance and OKX have seen significant drops compared to last year. Thin liquidity often results in higher price volatility, making the market susceptible to sharp swings from even modest trades. With US inflation data coming out later this week, market participants are keeping a close eye on whether institutional demand can hold up against these underlying structural weaknesses.
