LIVEJack Dorsey led payment firm Block recently shared its second quarter financial results, showing a 25 percent increase in total gross profit to reach $3.166 billion. While other parts of the business grew strongly, the company bitcoin ecosystem division went in the opposite direction. Gross profit for the bitcoin unit fell 31 percent year over year down to $72 million.
Bitcoin revenue also dropped, sliding about 13 percent to $1.894 billion compared to the same period last year. Company reports pointed to a strategic choice to lower transaction fees on certain Cash App bitcoin trades, along with shifting trading dynamics. Cash App previously made headlines for removing fees entirely on bitcoin purchases over $2,000, which weighed down profit margins.
Beyond operating results, Block recorded an $88.474 million bitcoin remeasurement loss due to fair value changes on its balance sheet holdings. This marked a large swing from the prior year gain of $212.165 million, though analysts note this is separate from core business operations.
Traders and investors should watch how lower transaction fees affect long term user adoption on Cash App. If reduced fees attract enough new trading volume, the short term profit squeeze could pay off with larger network activity down the road.
