The People’s Bank of China continues its aggressive gold buying strategy, marking 21 consecutive months of accumulation. In July alone, the central bank added 20 tonnes to its reserves, bringing its total year to date addition to 60 tonnes. This move solidifies its position as the sixth largest holder of the metal globally with 2,366 tonnes in total storage.

This trend is significant because gold now represents about 8 percent of China’s total reserves. While central banks across the globe added a net 23 tonnes of gold in July, the pace of buying is slightly slower than this time last year. Poland currently leads the pack in year to date purchases, having added 90 tonnes overall.

Investors often look to gold movements as a signal of how nations are managing their currency exposure. When central banks pull back from fiat and favor hard assets, it often sparks discussions about the strength of traditional money. Market participants should keep an eye on whether this buying spree continues through the end of the year, as it reflects a clear shift in how major economic powers manage their wealth.
