LIVEA software engineer at Coinbase has created an experimental project that connects a simulated fruit fly brain to a Bitcoin trading account. The project, called Stonkfly, uses a digital model of an adult male fruit fly nervous system. It processes visual inputs from candlestick charts to decide whether to buy, sell, or hold assets.
The system works by displaying price charts as images that are split across the simulated eyes of the insect model. When the model makes a profitable trade, it receives a virtual burst of dopamine. If it loses money or pays trading fees, it receives a negative signal. The model contains over 166,000 neurons and millions of connections, all mapped from existing neuroscientific research.
While the project is a fascinating technical feat, the creator notes that it does not necessarily prove the model learns to trade profitably. The software is currently set up to trade with paper money, and it includes safety limits such as a maximum of 24 trades per day. As of Saturday, the public dashboard showed no completed trades.
This experiment offers a unique look at how biological neural structures might interact with market data. Traders should watch the project to see if the simulated brain shows signs of adapting its strategy over time. It remains a purely experimental tool rather than a professional trading strategy.
