Crypto Fraudster Sentenced to 8 Years for $14.25M Scam

A Wisconsin court has sentenced 64 year old Stanley Pophal to eight years in federal prison after he ran a massive Ponzi scheme that cost 190 investors a total of $14.25 million. Pophal pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering charges earlier this year. He operated a company called Bright with Silver, selling promissory notes that promised returns of at least 20 percent while falsely claiming his personal wealth protected the money.

Instead of putting the funds into cryptocurrency, real estate, or commodities as promised, Pophal spent the cash on private plane rentals, property mortgages, and over 600 luxury items. Investigators found that his purchases included numerous vehicles, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. To keep the operation running, he used incoming funds from new investors to pay off earlier participants in classic Ponzi scheme fashion.

Law enforcement agencies seized the remaining assets from a rented warehouse, and public online auctions of the forfeited items began in July to help victims recover their losses.
