Crypto security is facing a dangerous trend as physical home invasions targeting digital asset holders have jumped 20 times over the last year. These incidents, often called wrench attacks, involve criminals using physical coercion to force victims to surrender access to their funds. According to new data, total financial exposure from these attacks reached $124.1 million in the first half of 2026, marking a significant increase from the previous year.

The rise in these crimes forces a shift in how we think about security. Relying on a single hardware wallet or a solo seed phrase is no longer enough when an attacker can threaten a person directly. Security experts now recommend moving toward multisignature or multiparty computation setups. By distributing approval power among different people or locations, it becomes impossible for one person under duress to authorize a full transfer.

Criminals often build detailed profiles of targets by combining leaked data, social media activity, and public wallet information.
