Malone Lam has pleaded guilty to racketeering charges after orchestrating a scheme that stole over 245 million dollars in cryptocurrency. The 22 year old led an international group that targeted individuals through social engineering, sometimes using home invasions to gain access to digital wallets. The operation, which ran from late 2023 through May 2025, relied on sophisticated laundering tactics to hide the stolen funds.

The stolen money bankrolled a wild lifestyle for Lam and his associates. Prosecutors revealed that the group spent 500,000 dollars in a single night at nightclubs and purchased cars worth nearly 4 million dollars. They also rented private jets and lived in luxury homes across cities like Miami and Los Angeles. Much of this fortune came from one victim who lost 4,100 Bitcoin after the group posed as tech support to gain remote access to his computer.

This case serves as a stark reminder that the biggest risk to crypto holdings is often human error rather than technical flaws in the blockchain. By targeting the credentials and private keys of account holders, the group bypassed standard security measures. Prosecutors are continuing to track other members of the criminal enterprise, with the next court hearing set for December 8.
