Ex Police Officer Sentenced to Life for Bitcoin Robbery

A former Los Angeles police officer, Eric Halem, received a life sentence plus 15 years for his part in a brutal 2024 robbery. Halem used his background as a reserve officer to lead a group that faked a police raid on a Koreatown apartment. The crew wore police vests and used official handcuffs to gain entry before restraining a teenager and his girlfriend.

The group threatened the victims with violence to secure a hard drive containing $350,000 worth of Bitcoin. During the trial, it surfaced that the victim had earned his crypto through fraudulent means, but the judge maintained that this did not justify the criminal actions of the officer. Judge Mildred Escobedo emphasized that the crime was a severe offense regardless of the origin of the stolen funds.
