Funeral Director Jailed After Embezzling $1.1 Million

Terry Kaufman, who ran Kaufman and Company Funeral Home, recently pleaded no contest to 39 felony counts. He admitted to stealing over $1.1 million from 204 different residents over the course of a decade. These victims had paid in advance to secure funeral arrangements for their loved ones, but the funds never reached their intended escrow accounts or insurance policies.

The fraud came to light after an investigation followed the death of a client. Officials discovered that the payments, including over $200,000 from the Huron County Public Guardian office, were used for personal expenses instead of being secured as promised. This breach of trust hit vulnerable families particularly hard, as many relied on these plans to avoid sudden financial burdens during times of grief.

A judge has sentenced Kaufman to at least seven years in prison and ordered him to pay back the full amount. However, legal experts suggest that the chances of the victims seeing their money again are quite low. This case serves as a stark reminder about the importance of verifying financial arrangements and oversight for prepaid services.
