LIVEStarting August 1, residents of Louisiana gain significant leverage over crypto ATM operators. Under new legislation known as Act 482, users can cancel transactions and demand a full refund if the kiosk operator lacked a proper state license at the time of the transaction. This measure aims to protect consumers from the risks associated with informal or non compliant digital currency kiosks.
To manage these requests, operators are required to acknowledge refund demands within 10 business days. If a user suspects fraud, the operator may ask for a police report or documentation from the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center. Once a claim is verified, the operator must complete the refund process within 90 days. The law also mandates that operators provide live customer support via a toll free number during all hours the machine is active.
This move comes after a period of high fraud reports involving kiosks. The FBI noted millions in losses linked to kiosk based activity in Louisiana throughout 2025. By enforcing stricter licensing and refund requirements, officials hope to hold kiosk businesses accountable for the security of their platforms. Traders and kiosk users should check if an operator is licensed before performing a transaction to ensure they are protected by these new rules.
