Michigan License Mix Up Sends Wrong Photos to 8,200 Residents

Thousands of Michigan residents recently received a surprise in the mail after applying for or renewing their enhanced driver's licenses and state IDs. Approximately 8,200 people were sent cards that featured the photo of a random man and an incorrect birthdate instead of their personal details. These cards were intended for federal uses like air travel, making the accuracy of the documents particularly important for cardholders.

State officials confirmed that the error occurred due to a production mix up at the vendor Idemia. During a one day printing session, the company used placeholder images and generic birthdates rather than the actual data belonging to the applicants. Authorities emphasize that the stranger on the card is not a real person and does not have access to any resident data.

To resolve the situation, the state has already mailed corrected documents to every affected individual free of charge. Residents who need valid identification immediately can print a temporary document from the state portal or visit a Secretary of State office in person.

While this glitch caused confusion, officials stress that no personal data breach took place. The mistake was limited strictly to the printed information on that specific batch of cards, meaning sensitive user information remains secure.
