A proposed upgrade to the XRP Ledger known as the Sponsor amendment could change how everyday people interact with network apps. Based on the XLS 68 proposal, the feature allows companies and banks to pay account reserves and transaction fees for users. Customers keep full control of their private keys and accounts, but they do not need to acquire or manage XRP beforehand.

Ripple product leaders note the setup is designed to remove the friction of getting users to buy crypto just to use institutional platforms or tokenized payments. Instead of forcing retail users to hold assets, the trade off shifts the burden straight to the balance sheets of banks and fintech platforms. Those sponsors must still hold XRP to cover account reserves and transaction fees, which are destroyed upon settlement.

While the idea makes onboarding easier, it means institutional players could quietly absorb a large portion of XRP ownership. A firm serving millions of users would need to accumulate massive reserves to back those accounts. The proposal is still far from going live, as validator support remains well below the required threshold.

Traders should watch validator voting patterns closely to see if sentiment shifts toward the amendment. If the upgrade eventually passes, it could pave the way for heavy institutional adoption while fundamentally changing how XRP is distributed across the market.
