Riot Platforms has inked a major 191 megawatt data center deal with an AI lab, promising nearly $9.1 billion in revenue over two decades. However, the project is a long term play. The facility will not begin generating rent payments until late 2027, leaving a significant gap between current construction costs and future cash flow.

To bridge this gap, Riot plans to use its Bitcoin reserves as a primary source of equity. The company reported holding 11,380 Bitcoin as of June 30, with roughly half already pledged against existing credit. During the first half of the year, Riot sold over 9,600 coins to manage its capital needs, signaling that further sales may be on the table as the company manages costs.

The project faces a complex financial road ahead. While Riot projects billions in spending for the build, it is still working to finalize the necessary debt financing. With mining costs currently high relative to production value, the firm faces a delicate balance. Investors should watch how the company manages its treasury alongside these construction milestones to see if the AI transition pays off as expected.
