Shopify Stock Jumps 17 Percent After Earnings Beat AI Fears
Shopify shares surged following a strong earnings report that silenced worries about artificial intelligence replacing commerce platforms.
Shopify stock jumped 17 percent on August 5 after a second quarter earnings beat shattered fears that artificial intelligence would hurt the business. Revenue climbed 34 percent year over year to reach $3.58 billion, beating market estimates by $140 million. The company also raised its guidance for the current quarter.
Over the summer, analysts worried that new artificial intelligence tools would allow small merchants to build their own software without using Shopify. CNBC host Jim Cramer pushed back hard against those predictions. He argued that small business owners lack the resources to build and maintain their own commerce infrastructure, even with advanced technology.
Shopify president Harley Finkelstein also rejected the threat narrative, stating that artificial intelligence is actually helping to create new businesses. More entrepreneurs launching stores means a larger customer base for Shopify. While some firms remain cautious due to competition from Meta, strong financial results for now favor the bulls.
