Texas Resident Loses $50,000 in Elaborate Jury Duty Scam

A woman in Fort Bend County, Texas, recently lost $50,000 to a clever scam involving impersonators posing as law enforcement. The callers claimed to be from the local sheriff's office and told the victim she had missed federal jury duty. They threatened her with an arrest warrant and insisted she follow a strict gag order to keep her on the line until the payment was made.

Following the criminals' instructions, the victim withdrew her cash and deposited it into a Bitcoin ATM across several transactions. These scammers rely heavily on psychological pressure, using fear and a false sense of urgency to prevent their victims from checking the facts with actual officials.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office has confirmed they never call residents to demand payment for warrants or fines. Sheriff Eric Fagan noted that these tactics are designed to stop people from thinking critically about the situation. To combat this, the department has started a weekly alert program called Scam Sunday to keep the public informed about current fraud risks.

This incident serves as a painful reminder to always verify caller identities independently. If you receive a call claiming you owe money to the government, hang up and call the official department number directly.
