World Cup Betting: 5 Traders Pocket Millions on Polymarket

The recent World Cup generated massive interest for prediction markets, with Polymarket and Kalshi recording a combined 5.57 billion dollars in volume. Data shows that these platforms are moving into the mainstream, as prediction markets grew to account for 27 percent of legal US sports betting volume during the tournament. The frequent match schedule allowed for constant trading activity, keeping liquidity high throughout the event.

Despite the high volume, the financial results were lopsided. A review of nearly 200,000 addresses shows that about two thirds of traders ended up in the red. For the majority of winners, the gains were small, with the average profitable user earning less than 5 dollars. In contrast, a tiny fraction of users walked away with the vast majority of the profits.

Specifically, only 54 addresses captured roughly 60 percent of all gains, with five accounts each earning over 1 million dollars. Experts suggest this disparity highlights how capital and technology advantages can concentrate returns in prediction markets. While retail betting grabbed headlines, industry insiders believe the future of these platforms lies in commercial hedging for businesses dealing with regulatory or economic risks.
