Nasdaq Invests $100 Million Into Kraken Parent Payward
Nasdaq has taken a strategic stake in the company behind Kraken as it pushes forward with plans to trade tokenized stocks.
Nasdaq recently invested $100 million into Payward, the parent company of the crypto exchange Kraken. This investment values Payward at $21 billion. The move strengthens a partnership formed earlier this year between the two companies. Nasdaq is specifically looking to build out its capabilities for trading tokenized shares, which are digital records of stocks that can be traded outside of traditional market hours.
Payward already operates a service called xStocks that specializes in this technology. By bringing Payward closer to its own operations, Nasdaq aims to benefit from existing infrastructure that has already processed billions in trades. This partnership goes beyond a typical venture capital move because Nasdaq relies on Payward to handle the settlement and verification processes for its tokenized equity products.
While this investment is significant, it does not speed up the timing for Kraken to go public. Payward has faced delays with its initial public offering and is now aiming for the second quarter of 2027. The new funding provides the company with more financial breathing room and reduces the immediate pressure to launch an IPO.
Investors should pay attention to how this relationship develops as Nasdaq expands its presence in the digital asset space. This deal suggests that Nasdaq is more interested in the underlying plumbing of tokenized finance than simply backing a crypto exchange. Moving forward, the focus will be on how effectively these two firms integrate their systems to offer global equity tokens.
