An 86 year old resident of New Kent, Virginia, recently fell victim to a sophisticated phone scam that cost her $11,500. The incident began when a pop up alert on her computer warned her of a fake hacking attempt, prompting her to call a number she believed belonged to Wells Fargo. The person on the other end convinced her to withdraw her own money to protect it from the alleged breach.

The scammer maintained contact through dozens of phone calls, pressuring the victim to move her checking and savings funds. Beyond the cash withdrawals, the victim was also coerced into buying gift cards from local retailers and providing the numbers to the caller. She finally sensed a problem when the caller demanded that she take out a new loan for $5,000.

After contacting the actual bank, the victim learned that no suspicious activity had occurred on her accounts, but the stolen money was already gone. This case serves as a stark reminder that banks will never ask customers to move money into a treasury account or purchase gift cards to secure their funds. Always verify contact information through official bank websites rather than responding to pop up warnings or incoming calls.
